Former Phillies GM has two words for Klentak: starting pitchers

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Phillies dropped their series finale to the Braves 12-10. The Nationals are in town to open a series Monday at 7:05 p.m. And before that, it's the 4 p.m. Major League Baseball trade deadline.

A former Phillies general manager says it would suit the Phils to keep improving their roster.

Ruben Amaro Jr. was always active at the trade deadline when the Phils were World Series contenders in '09, '10 and '11.

"For me, it was one of the most exciting times of the year," he said.

Now that's the job of current General Manager Matt Klentak — who already made moves to help the bullpen. Amaro believes Klentak should look to add more arms.

"I think the difficulty that Matt has is: How much do you want to sell from your future to buy to your present?"

He says he believes there are still areas Klentak can address.

"Starting pitching is always a thing, and if I were him right now, I'd be looking at pitching across the board," Amaro said.

The Phillies are 14-15 this season. There are 31 games left. They are very much on the hunt for a playoff spot — which Amaro thinks they're capable of getting.

"But if you really wanted to go further and deeper into the playoffs, ... the more pitching the better," he said.

The Phils are supposedly right up against the luxury tax, but Klentak has said before that's a guide and not a threshold they're incapable of surpassing.
