"Recently," said Haneef Hill, founder of Urban Youth Kings and Queens, "we learned that a lot of school districts have decided to go 100% virtual, which in turn has put a burden on a lot of parents who have to work and who don’t have the ability to stay at home and work."
Hill's organization is teaming up with Providence Baptist Church in Germantown, opening a learning center geared toward children ages 10 and older, in an effort to ease the burden placed on families during the pandemic.
"Maybe one of the children likes art or dealing with finance," he said. "We want to encourage these children to explore these possible opportunities and look to (not just) being a student but how to start a business at a young age."
The alternative work space will provide free WiFi and educational mentors.
Hill and his staff are also planning a clothing drive to raise funds to renovate their neighborhood park.
