PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The University of Delaware Blue Hens are coming off an impressive 7-1 campaign (4-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association) that saw them advance all the way to the semifinals of the FCS playoffs.
Hopes are high that more of that kind of success is in store this fall.
Head coach Danny Rocco likes what his team will bring to the table this season.
“I’d say our biggest strengths are our depth and our experience,” he told KYW Newsradio.
”We have a deep roster, and a lot of these guys got a lot of quality minutes here this past spring. Pretty much everybody’s back. Guys understand their roles. They understand their positions better. They understand the playbook better.”
Last season for Delaware actually happened this past spring, after being postponed from the fall due to COVID-19. So when it is all said and done, the Blue Hens will play a lot of football games in the calendar year of 2021.
Rocco says they are very aware of that fact as they prepare for the fall.
“I think that there is no doubt that it presents unusual challenges,” he said of having two seasons so close together.
“Have you correctly adjusted to them and recognized them? We have run a different camp this summer. Our camp model that’s been in place for quite awhile. We tweak it every other year. You make some minor adjustments, but this year’s model is significantly different in what we’re doing, in the volume of what we’re doing, the length of time and the amount of contact.”
Delaware will open the season on Thursday night, September 2 on the road with a CAA game against Maine.
