PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Drexel Dragons are going to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 25 years. Drexel captured the CAA championship with a 63-56 win over Elon.

“I probably can’t put it into proper perspective, but I know that I’m just really, really happy for the group, our assistant coaches, our managers and our players to stick through it,” Drexel Coach Zach Spiker said.

Junior Cam Wynter was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

“It means everything. It’s the reason I came here. It’s the reason Coach Spiker recruited me. I did everything I could to help bring a CAA championship back to Philadelphia,” Wynter said.

Senior Zach Walton went though some difficult years with the program but knew there was something special about this year’s team.

“We always knew that we had a chance to win this thing and we never had any doubt in our mind. We got a lot of time to practice and work on the things we needed to get better at, and that’s what we did and it showed this week,” Walton said.

Spiker said one of the big reasons for his team’s success was the way they handled COVID-19 restrictions throughout the season.

"I don’t want to jinx things, but I’m very proud of the discipline our players have showed from a testing standpoint. We were in position to play basketball games all season."

The Dragons won the title despite being a sixth seed in the tournament. They will learn who their opponent will be in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.
