Finding ways to be more energy efficient is good for both the environment and the financial health of your business. Saving energy doesn’t have to be a laborious process or expensive, as there are some small steps you can take as a business owner to cut down on costs.
Check out these energy-saving tips and upgrades that can be easily implemented to help your small business be more green and save money at the same time.

Unplug electronics
It may seem obvious, but one of the simplest things to do to save energy is to turn off all electronics when they are not being used. But to conserve more energy and money, it is best to unplug all equipment as most modern electronics and appliances draw standby electricity even when the switch is flipped to off. Unplugging electronics at night can potentially save up to 10% on your energy bill.
LED lighting
Switching to energy-efficient light bulbs is another easy way to save money and bring down energy costs. LED (light emitting diodes) lighting uses between 80% to 90% less energy than regular bulbs, with some LED bulbs lasting up to 10xs longer than incandescent ones.

Install dimmers and occupancy sensors
Don’t waste energy when staff aren’t around. Installing occupancy sensors in storage rooms, bathrooms and other common areas will turn on lights when human presence is detected and turn off after an intermittent period of time has gone by. Installing dimmers will also help to only use the amount of light needed in a particular situation, while also making it adjustable to the comfort levels of your employees.
Programmable thermostats
In addition to letting you adjust room temperature remotely, installing smart thermostats can be easily programmed to keep offices comfortable when employees are present and more energy-efficient during downtimes.
Improve insulation and cooling techniques
Make checking for air leaks near openings, vents, and ducts part of your regular maintenance routine. Should a leak be found, prioritize having it properly insulated and sealed. Sealing off leaks will improve heating in the winter and help maintain your space cooler in the summer. During warmer months, if feasible, install outdoor shades (rather than indoor ones) to keep heat from impacting your interiors.
