Adopting more eco-friendly business practices is a way to create a healthier environment for your employees and clients. But becoming a more sustainable office doesn’t have to be expensive as there are ways to go green without breaking your bottom line.

In addition to recycling paper and plastics, here are some small steps business owners can implement that will help their organization lower their carbon footprint and help reduce waste.

The future is paperless

Ideally, going completely paperless to a digital-only office would save the most money and trees. If that isn’t feasible, cutting paper use can start with making less copies and printing fewer documents. Reach out to vendors and ask them to send electronic invoices and statements instead of paper ones. And if you haven’t already done so, set up automatic payments instead of sending out paper checks.

Install lighting controls

Gone are the days of having the power on all day and at full strength. Upgrading your lighting with dimmers and sensors will allow for power to only be used only when people are actually in the room and at a suitable comfort level.

Adjust the thermostat

Are your employees walking around the office in sweaters and hoodies in the summer? Make sure your space is at a comfortable temperature and not excessively using the air conditioning. Adjusting a programmable thermostat a degree or two can not only save money but also make the temperature more agreeable with the majority of your workforce.

Go green with plants

Adding plants to desks and common areas can improve air quality and add a touch of life to what may be a very sterile environment. In addition, seeing more natural elements within your business space can help uplift the mood and spirits of your clients and staff.

Encourage alternative forms of commuting

The last couple of years has seen the rise in telecommuting. While remote work isn’t always possible, business owners can encourage employees to find alternate means of getting to work without the use of their vehicle. Offering incentives like raffles and prizes to those who walk, bike, carpool, or use mass transit are ways that can motivate employees to leave their gas guzzlers at home.
