PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 16-year-old is dead and a 13-year-old is injured following a double shooting in Southwest Philadelphia.

Police responded to 56th Street and Grays Avenue, near Deritis Playground, Thursday around 7:30 p.m., where they found 16-year-old Quamir Mitchell with a gunshot wound to the chest.

He was pronounced dead at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia shortly thereafter.

Mitchell was a prominent basketball player at West Philadelphia High School.

Monica Lewis, deputy chief of communications for the School District of Philadelphia, said Mitchell was also a hard-working student. The high school community is mourning his loss.

“It is definitely a tragic situation and one that we unfortunately seen far too many times here in the city of Philadelphia,” she said.

“The students, the 11th- and 12th-graders at West Philadelphia High School, participated in a virtual town hall today to just kind of talk out what they were feeling and how this has impacted them. We have also informed them as well as our school community about the services that will be available to our students and staff who have been impacted by this loss.”

A 13-year-old boy was also taken to CHOP, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the arm. He is listed in stable condition.

Police have not made any arrests. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Homicide Unit at 215-686-3334 or leave an anonymous tip at 215-686-TIPS.

An investigation is ongoing.
