PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police say a teenager is dead after a shooting Thursday in the Kingsessing neighborhood of West Philadelphia. According to authorities, a 16-year-old boy was shot twice in the head just after 10:30 a.m. on Grays Avenue near 53rd Street.

He was rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead just before 11 a.m.

Investigators have not disclosed a motive for the shooting. No weapon was recovered at the scene, and there have been no arrests.

Several police vehicles were seen blocking off the site of the shooting on the 5300 block of Grays Avenue, which is a couple of blocks northwest of Bartram Gardens.

Police believed shots may have been fired from inside a house on the block. Around 12:40 p.m., police declared a barricade at the house, where they believed several people were hiding.

However, a SWAT team entered the house and found no one inside. Police said they did find blood, and they are holding the house for the homicide investigation.

This latest shooting comes one day after a 15-year-old boy was shot and injured outside Dendy Recreation Center in North Philadelphia.

According to data from the Office of the Controller, homicides are down 11% from the same time last year, but 2023 is still on pace to be another of the deadliest years on record in the city.

Of more than 500 shootings in the city this year, at least 100 have been fatal. At least 54 of those shooting victims have been younger than 18. At least 8 minors have been killed by gun violence.
