PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Four people were hospitalized after a pair of overnight shootings near Temple University's campus.
Around 10 p.m. Friday, at Broad Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue, police said two teenage girls were wounded inside their car when they rolled down a window to talk to a group of men.
When the men got too close, one girl pulled out pepper spray. One of the men fired into the car in response, hitting the two teens. One was shot in the arm. The girl using the pepper spray was hit in the back, according to police. They were taken to a hospital, where they were both listed in stable condition.
One suspect was later taken into custody.
"A lot of kids are here because of different things going on. It's the first warm weekend that we've had," said Philadelphia Police Capt. John Walker. "A lot of kids are out enjoying the evening. When we have gunfire like this, bullets have no names."
Hours later, around 1:45 a.m. Saturday, authorities said a man and woman were outside a house party on Gratz Street near Diamond Street, when someone got out of a vehicle and started firing. The man, 30, was shot in the abdomen, while the woman, 19, was hit in the right foot.
The shooter then got back into the vehicle and fled westbound on Diamond Street. Police said the vehicle is possibly orange or red.
Both victims were taken to a hospital. The woman was listed as stable, and the man was placed in critical condition.
No arrests have been made in that incident.
This comes after a new survey of Temple University students detailed that many students feel less safe the further they live from campus. The school previously introduced new safety measures after the shooting death of a student last November.
The changes included a 50% increase in campus security, more Philadelphia police patrols off-campus and a shuttle service to and from campus housing.
