PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A dog found abandoned and unable to move Wednesday along a stretch of train tracks in Montgomery County is recovering from spinal surgery.
Lucky, a pit bull mix, was discovered near SEPTA's Lawndale Regional Rail Station. His back legs were immobile and it was unclear whether he'd been hit by a train or was a victim of animal cruelty.
According to Philly Rescue Angels, a nonprofit caring for the dog, Lucky made it through Friday's six-hour surgery. He's being kept comfortable and is receiving injectable pain medication, after receiving two plates along his spine.
Unfortunately, Lucky is still at risk for developing myelomalacia, a fatal condition that occurs which is when there is an impaired blood supply to the spinal cord. As a result, he will be staying in the ICU for more a week, which will be costly, according to the nonprofit.
The condition is said to develop aggressively, though Lucky's doctors say he is trending in the right direction.
Philly Rescue Angels are still accepting donations to help pay for Lucky's care.
