Alleged carjacker in custody after barricading himself from police

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An 18-year-old wanted for multiple armed carjackings has been taken into custody after he barricaded himself from police for about 15 minutes.

It happened shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday night in the Spring Garden area of Philadelphia.

Police say the man bailed from a car at Broad and Wallace streets during a stop. After a brief foot chase, he ran inside a nearby property on Wallace Street.

Three other men were detained after leaving the property. The main suspect was taken into custody shortly afterwards. No injuries were reported.

Carjackings in Philadelphia saw a 34% increase in 2021. More than 140 have already been reported this year.
