Artists use skills, supplies to help address Kensington addiction crisis

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Two area artists are using their craft to assist those suffering from addiction in Kensington.

As the opioid epidemic and a housing insecurity crisis continue, Kathryn Pannepacker and her colleague Lisa Kelly are doing something to make a difference.

"With folks in active addiction who are in shelters, we just really feel that there's got to be a way to bring community together," said Pannepacker.

The two packed up their art supplies and went to Kensington, to lend their skills and paintbrushes to those suffering from addiction, in the hopes that teaching them painting, sculpting and other projects will help them heal.

"We've been doing art as harm reduction at Prevention Point Philadelphia in Kensington," said Pannepacker. Two days a week, she and Kelly set up a pop-up studio and put their art supplies to work.

"So let's create a space," she said. "Let’s call it a sanctuary space where all can come and sit around and talk."

Pannepacker said all are welcome to join every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Prevention Point Philadelphia at 2913-15 Kensington Avenue.
