SOUTH JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Casinos in Atlantic City are bouncing back from the coronavirus pandemic, even with some of the restrictions that were imposed early this year.
It has been a good year so far for casino owners in the Shore town. They reported a collective profit of more than $280 million in the first six months.
"It is a sign that the gaming industry in Atlantic City is strong," sid Jane Bokunewicz, the director of the Lloyd D. Levenson Institute of Gaming, Hospitality and Tourism at Stockton University.
"But if you look at the net revenue, the net revenue was down compared to 2019, but the gross operating profit was up. So that’s a sign that the operators are operating the properties efficiently."
She says hotel occupancy limits also put a cap on potential revenue from dining and shows. So overall, she says, there are really good signs that the industry has recovered.
"We're going to start to see those non-gaming revenues come up in line with gaming revenues, and it should be a full recovery, hopefully, in the third quarter," Bokunewicz said.
Of course, that could all change if restrictions are reimposed because of COVID-19.
