Authorities say South Philly fire that killed 1 man was arson

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An early morning fire in South Philadelphia that claimed the life of a man was intentionally set, according to authorities.

Firefighters were called to the scene of a burning home near Second and Tree streets around 5:30 a.m. Saturday.

Once inside, they found the victim's body. He was unidentified at the time of discovery.

Police said a 90-year-old neighbor was injured while evacuating her home. She was taken to Jefferson Hospital in stable condition.

The Philadelphia Police Department's Homicide Unit is now investigating what the fire marshal has declared an arson.
