PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Cape May Beach Patrol has told the family of Norman Inferrera that civic leaders will be naming a beach in the Jersey Shore town after the lifeguard who was killed last week, his family said.

Scholarships are also being established in his honor.

Inferrera, a 16-year-old lifeguard, died while on duty Thursday. His boat capsized when a wave flipped his boat over, and he became unconscious when his head struck the boat.

On the family's GoFundMe page, Inferrera's aunt Kathleen Price said that he rescued numerous people, including a four-year-old child, while serving in his lifeguard role.

His aunt also said that due to the generosity of donors to the GoFundMe, they will begin scholarships in his name which will be given through the Cape May Beach Patrol Cannone Scholarship Fund and Phoenixville Area High School, where he attended.

"Champ would be so glad to know that he will be helping future college bound students achieve their dreams and goals! I can clearly see his smile now," his aunt said.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy shared his condolences on Twitter.
