PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Agriculture-detecting beagles made a huge find over the weekend at Philadelphia International Airport.
A U.S. Customs and Border Protection detector dog named Harrie, who is part of the Beagle Brigade, sniffed out nearly 44 pounds of beef, uncooked rice, fruits, vegetables, leaves and seeds in the checked baggage of a couple who arrived from Bangladesh.
The couple denied possessing any agricultural products during their primary inspection. All of the items were destroyed.
Agriculture brought into the country illegally can introduce foreign animal or plant diseases and invasive insects or weeds.
Last year, CBP agriculture dogs detected more than 120,000 prohibited items at ports of entry across the country, and more than 96,000 items in the first half of this year.
