PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia's Dr. Ala Stanford has been appointed by President Joe Biden to a federal role.

She will oversee a regional office for the Department of Health and Human Services.

Dr. Stanford will lead Region 3 which serves Pennsylvania and Delaware, according to the White House.

Within her role, Dr. Stanford will make sure the department keeps in close contact with various partners and leaders and works to address the needs of their communities.

Dr. Stanford has been in practice for more than two decades and is the founder of Philadelphia’s Black Doctors COVID-19 Consortium. The group was formed to answer the dramatically higher percentage of Black Philadelphians being diagnosed and dying from coronavirus.

In two years, the group helped vaccinate and test tens of thousands of Philadelphians and has established a North Philadelphia health clinic with another one being planned in the city.

Her district also includes the District of Columbia, Virginia and West Virginia.
