PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police said that a 5-year-old boy was recovering after he was shot in the arm inside a home in North Philadelphia.

Investigators said that around 7:30 p.m. Thursday night, they were notified that the boy was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound. Police then went to the home near the corner of North Fifth and West Cumberland streets.

"When police went inside the property and went to the second floor in the middle bedroom, they found the scene,” said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

“Inside the middle bedroom, they found some blood. They also found a semi-automatic handgun under the bed. And on the bed, they found a large, plastic bag that contained a large amount of a green, weed-like substance. It appears to be marijuana."

Detectives were talking to the child's father and grandmother and treating them as witnesses.

It was initially unclear to investigators which person was responsible for shooting the boy, and how he was shot.

The boy was listed in stable condition and was taken to a different hospital to treat the injury.
