PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Dozens of shelter dogs and cats from tornado-devastated Kentucky will be up for adoption in the Delaware Valley starting Wednesday.
Linda Torelli, chief marketing officer of the Brandywine Valley SPCA, said 45 dogs and puppies and 30 cats and kittens are coming to the region from a Louisville animal shelter.
Louisville was spared from the bulk of the devastation caused by the series of tornadoes over the weekend, which has killed at least 88 people across five states to date.
The pets were put on the Brandywine Valley SPCA’s bus and taken to the greater Philadelphia area, with the hopes of eventually finding forever homes.
“One of the most important factors in rescue work during disasters is to remove animals that were up for adoption before the storm,” said Torelli, “so that any animals displaced during the storm can stay in that local area.
“So by helping to empty out the shelters of currently available adoptables, we’re making space for lost family pets, families that need to give up their pets, so that those animals can stay in that local community.”
The relocated pets will be available for adoption at the Brandywine Valley SPCA’s facilities in West Chester, Pennsylvania, and in Dover, Georgetown and New Castle, Delaware.
