11 including Marine veteran receiving Camden County MLK Freedom Medal

Gala honoring award winners was rescheduled due to COVID-19

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Camden County is recognizing 11 residents who are keeping Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream alive with the county's Freedom Medal awards.

The county had planned to honor these citizens on the late civil rights leader’s birthday last month, but with COVID-19 numbers soaring, it had to be rescheduled.

This year, the event will take place during Black History Month.

"When they called me, I couldn't believe it. They said, 'Nice to meet you. Congratulations on receiving the award.' I was like, 'What award?'" said Sickerville's Mark Bodrog, one of 11 Camden County residents being recognized for their contributions at the 2022 Camden County Freedom Medal Ceremony next week.

"I was completely taken aback. It was a dream come true."

After serving two tours in Afghanistan and earning two degrees from Rutgers-Camden University, it was the former Marine captain's mission to help other vets do the same.

"My veterans, students, fraternities, and sororities actually helped us pass unanimous legislation that allow veterans to get college credit for honorable discharges and also priority course enrollment," said Bodrog.

"I get motivated from helping veterans, helping others. You find the time whether it's 1 a.m. in the morning or 1 p.m. in the afternoon."

From sounding off against gun violence, helping small businesses, inspiring teens, fighting for inclusion, or promoting education, the honorees of all ages and races are following the teachings of Dr. King, Camden County Commissioner Jonathan L. Young, Sr. said.

"When you have an individual who can go out into the community and unite them as one, it's just a special thing," he added.

"It's a mixture of females, males, elderly folks, young folks, Black folks, white folks, good people that follow Dr. King's teachings."

The in-person ceremony takes place at the Collingswood Ballroom on February 24, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m.
