WILMINGTON, Del. (KYW Newsradio) — Delaware Gov. John Carney has cancelled public events for next week after the head of the state's Emergency Management Agency tested positive for COVID-19.

Carney said he spent time around DEMA Director AJ Schall on Tuesday but has not been identified as a close contact by the Division of Public Health.

Schall tested positive on Friday, and is currently at home with mild symptoms, according to the governor.

The governor said his decision to cancel next week's events was made out of an abundance of caution. He did say, however, he would hold his regular COVID-19 briefing virtually on Tuesday.

"This only underscores the seriousness of this virus. It's a real threat," said Carney. "Let's all do our part to limit the spread this winter. Wear a mask. Think twice before gathering with friends or family outside your household."
