CHESTER, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A 4-year-old girl is dead in what officials say was likely an accidental shooting in Chester, Delaware County.
The girl and her 2-year-old brother were in a car, which was parked outside a convenience store and gas station, when a gun went off. Investigators say the boy was holding the gun when it discharged.
The 2-year-old was not physically hurt. The girl died at the hospital.
Sources say no adults were in the car at the time of the shooting. The gun was unsecured and loaded but legally owned and permitted.
The shooting happened just before 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Eagle Fuel gas station, located at the corner of Kerlin Street and Concord Avenue, off of West Ninth Street.
“It is a matter that we are actively investigating again," said Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer.
"Everybody in the community of Chester, in Delaware County, myself included, all of us are just heartbroken to think of what happened to this poor child. We are actively investigating to see if charges are warranted, who actually pulled the trigger, and why was it available. Those kinds of questions still need to be answered."
The gas station and mini-market remained open for business after the shooting.
