UPPER DARBY, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Twin girls were killed in an early-morning house fire in Upper Darby on Tuesday.
It started around 4 a.m. in a row home in the middle of Margate Road, just off of Garrett Road. The neighborhood is right by Beverly Hills Middle School.
When firefighters arrived, there were heavy flames on the second floor. The children’s mother escaped by jumping out of a window in the back of the home.
Upper Darby Fire Chief Derrick Sawyer said firefighters tried to save the girls, who were in their bedroom.
“They made a real valiant effort to try to get to these children, to no avail,” he said. “Today’s a sad day for the township. We lost two of our children today in this fire.”
Their ages were not disclosed. Neighbors said they were twin girls.

Two firefighters who tried to rescue the children suffered minor burns and were treated at the hospital. In all, it took about 20 minutes to get the fire under control.
The mother was also taken to the hospital.
Neighbor Kyle Miller was heartbroken for the family. He remembered them as “joyful” and just “good, wholesome kids.”
“They just had a barbecue out there not too long ago ... and they were out there with their family. So it’s real sad to see the kids have passed,” he said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. It’s unclear how many working smoke detectors were in the home.
