Collegeville restaurant collects nearly 10,000 toys, tons of food to give for Christmas

Collegeville Italian Bakery owner lost count as toys filled 2,200 square foot space

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Pledging that “every child should have a Christmas,” a Montgomery County restaurant has led a massive community effort to collect toys and food for the holiday.

Collegeville Italian Bakery owner Steve Carcaray says they tried to count how many toys they collected, but he has lost count. He estimates upwards of 10,000.

“It was a big goal to fill this building, and we did it," he said.

Carcarey said they were continuing a tradition that started last year when their dining room was closed because of COVID-19.

“Our goal was to fill our dining room, which we did," he added.

"This year, we were allowed to have dining. Our building next door is vacant, 2,200 square feet, and we said, 'You know what, let's fill the building.'”

He says they were also able to collect food measured in tons rather than pounds.

Carcarey is quick to pass the credit to community members and businesses, saying over and over that this is not about the Collegeville Italian Bakery.

“The biggest thing is, the kids in our community would have smiles because they're going to have Christmas," Carcarey said.

"That's what it's about.”
