PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Retirements and resignations have left vacancies on the police force that patrols the four Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) bridges and PATCO. The agency is hoping extra money will help restore the ranks.

Through the end of this month, DPRA is offering $2,000 signing bonuses to new officers and $1,000 referral fees, plus an extra day off, for employees who recommend new officers.

DRPA Police Chief Edward Cobbs acknowledged that the department has some vacancies, though he won’t say how many for security reasons.

While there are currently enough officers to keep drivers and PATCO riders safe, he said there could soon be more areas to patrol.

“We have some challenges coming up,” he said. “We have the possibility of Franklin Square opening up at the end of the year, and so that may make us reevaluate our personnel.”

The starting salary for a DRPA officer is $64,000 — comparable with SEPTA, which bumped up its police pay last year.
