New Delaware County anti-violence data tool developed by students, activists

Swarthmore College students team with CeaseFirePA to build new data-driven effort

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Delaware County non-profit is working with local activists and college students to help stop gun violence in their communities.

"Gun violence in Delaware County was rising, and we were worried about shooting and homicides in their community," said Adam Garber, executive director at CeaseFirePA Education Fund.

That organization teamed up with Swarthmore College students, faculty, local action groups, and activists to launch Delaware County's first interactive homicide database as a way to help halt gun violence.

They discovered a lack of data.

"There was a gap in information that was available to both the public and partners, to understand where gun violence was happening," said Garber.

"We do two pieces. We take all the data from the CDC on how gun violence is impacting local people in Delaware County."

But it's not just about the data. It's also a way to recognize victims and their families through their stories.

"Connect it with news stories about outlets in the community," he said.

Garber hopes the database will not just shine a light on data, but also the stories of the victims.

"They’re not stats," said Garber. "They’re people."
