DEPTFORD TWP., N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A Deptford Township police officer who was wounded in a shooting two months ago has died.

During a pedestrian stop on Delsea Drive on March 10, around 1 p.m., suspect Mitchell Negron Jr., 24, took off running. Officer Robert Shisler, 27, chased the man, which led to a gunfight between the two.

Both men were shot. Negron ran off, eventually collapsing on Doman Avenue, where he died.

Shisler, who was shot in the leg, was rushed to Cooper University Hospital. Authorities say he developed several infections and his leg had to be amputated. On Sunday, Shisler died from his injuries. He is the first Deptford officer killed in the line of duty in the department's history.

A procession was held in his honor that same day.

Our partners at NBC10 say officers gathered outside the Deptford Township Police Department before draping a black cloth over Shisler's police cruiser and crossing the bridge into Pennsylvania to escort his body from HUP to the Philadelphia Medical Examiner's Office.

“Though nothing can take away from the pain of his passing, Bobby's incredible strength and bravery will be an unforgettable example of being Deptford Strong. He was the best of all of us," read a statement from the Police Department.

"Officer Shisler will always be remembered for his dedication and his commitment to the residents of this great community. We are extremely grateful and thankful for his service. He will be sorely missed but never forgotten.”

The Deptford Township Police Department released a statement on Facebook about the transfer of Shisler's body from the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office to Boucher Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 9.

No further details about his funeral have been announced at this time.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for his family for those who wish to donate.
