Driver fatally struck by metal debris on I-95 in South Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A woman was killed by a falling piece of metal while driving on I-95 on Monday.

Pennsylvania State Police said 33-year-old Cara Mia Panichelli was driving her Subaru Impreza south on I-95 near Columbus Boulevard around 4:45 p.m. when a large piece of metal pierced the driver’s side windshield.

She was struck in the chest and lost control of her car, striking a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the process. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three people in the Jeep, including a child, were not injured, authorities said.

Panichelli, according to her obituary on the Pennsylvania Burial Company's website, was a mother of two.

Investigators don’t know where the piece of metal came from.

Police are asking anyone who was driving on I-95 on Monday and might have seen what happened to give them a call at 215-452-5216.
