Police have someone in custody connected to Germantown hit-and-run that killed a woman

Neighbors, community leaders "angry, upset" over latest fatal accident in Germantown this summer

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia police say they now have a person of interest in custody in connection with the hit-and-run that killed a woman walking on a Germantown sidewalk.

It happened around 11 p.m. Thursday near Greene and West Coulter streets.

A witness told police a white SUV crossed into oncoming traffic, hopped the curb and destroyed a utility pole before hitting the woman, whose identity is still unknown.

Police say the woman, believed to be in her 40s or 50s, also was dragged about 15 feet and possibly run over by the SUV. She died at the scene.

Witnesses say four people got out of the SUV and ran away, leaving the car at the scene.

Sandra Jackson has lived on the block where it happened for decades, and said the problem is speeding drivers.

"Speed bumps around here right now — they should have them," she urged, "because these guys are flying by."

Jackson said drivers are just as reckless at that intersection as they are a block away, at Germantown Avenue and West Coulter Street. That's where two women were struck and killed by hit-and-run drivers in separate incidents earlier this summer. She said she's fearful for her family's safety.

"When it's so close to you, not even 50 feet away from where I am now," shared Jackson, "they come flying."

State Rep. Darisha Parker said she was "angry, upset and extremely frustrated" over the loss once again suffered by the Germantown community. She said she met with other city officials as well as the Streets Department Friday.

"We gotta have a community meeting, not just to hear from the Streets Department, but also hear from SEPTA, PennDOT, from Councilmember Bass' office ... all the experts," she said.

That meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 8 at Germantown Friends School, at 8 p.m.

Charges are still pending as the investigation continues.
