PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia is using something very unique to the city as part of its pitch to host the 2026 World Cup.
Lincoln Financial Field is the home to the Eagles, but Monday afternoon it played host to mural arts as they unveiled a digital mural on the stadiums large screens, with the hopes of having a different kind of football played there.
"I think it’s major for soccer fans, especially soccer fans in Philly," said Nile Livingston, the mural’s artist.
"I keep saying the city is so diverse and has so many different types of people. I think it’s appropriate for the World Cup to be here, and I think soccer fans will really appreciate it as well."
She said in addition to her art, it’s a chance for all Philadelphians to get in on the pitch.
"They can send in a photo of Philadelphia, kids playing soccer or things that really feel uplifting about the sport, and it serves as a petition to bring the World Cup to Philly," she added.
Mural Arts director Jane Golden says their appeal to FIFA and U.S. Soccer will show things visitors from around the world can only experience in the city of brotherly love and sisterly affection.
"I hope that they see that Philadelphia is a gritty, spunky, energetic, wonderful, diverse, rich city and there’s no place like Philadelphia," said Golden.
Philadelphia is one of 17 cities in the county vying for one of those 10 host city spots.
