PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 7-year-old girl is in stable condition at the hospital after police said she was shot while in the back seat of a car in the Fairhill section of North Philadelphia Tuesday night.

Police said a family was in a Honda sedan, driving south on Marshall Street, near West Indiana Avenue. Shortly after 7 p.m., at least five shots were fired from one or multiple semi-automatic handguns, officials said.

“That vehicle [was] struck three times, and one bullet went through the driver’s side rear door,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small. “We believe that bullet is the one that entered the vehicle, striking the 7-year-old female in her arm.”

When family members realized the girl was shot, they rushed her to a hospital a few blocks away, police said.

Investigators did not say what may have prompted the gunfire in the first place. They are trying to obtain surveillance footage to learn more.

“We did find several private surveillance cameras in the immediate area,” Small added. “Hopefully these cameras recorded something that can help us with this shooting.”
