PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Voter registration figures in Philadelphia show a large number of Republican and independent voters have switched to become Democrats for the upcoming primary election.
The District Attorney's race between incumbent Larry Krasner and challenger Carlos Vega appears to be the primary motivation.
About 7,000 Philadelphia voters switched parties to become Democrats, the largest number of defections since 2016 and the largest number in a non-presidential election in at least a decade.
"I think it’s great. We’ll take ‘em," Democratic city committee chair Bob Brady said.
He explained that he wants to credit President Joe Biden’s popularity, or disenchantment with former President Donald Trump, but he concedes some people may have switched parties to vote in the DA’s race.
"The police are really putting on a big effort to change Republicans up in the Northeast," said Brady.
"Maybe they’re changing to Democrat to be able to vote for Carlos Vega, because a lot of people maybe don’t like the idea that Krasner may win again."
A Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police spokesperson confirms they have made a concerted effort to get members registered as Democrats to vote in the DA primary, hoping to unseat Krasner and elect Vega.
However, Brady also believes the local Republican party has a problem beyond the recent defections. They nominated no candidate in the race for city controller, and not a single candidate for any of the 11 city judgeships that are being decided this year.
