NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — Nearly 9 out of 10 people would rather have in-home care than live in a nursing home, according to an AARP survey. Gov. Phil Murphy’s proposed budget includes $100 million for workforce development to help get more qualified workers to provide in-home services for seniors.

“After a lifetime of hard work and contributing to our society, seniors deserve to live with independence, security and dignity. And the vast majority of New Jerseyans want to live at home and in their communities,” said Evelyn Liebman, the director of advocacy for the New Jersey AARP.

Liebman says they would also like to see relief through tax breaks for families who take care of elderly loved ones without outside help.

“Particularly for folks in that sandwich generation, who are caring for kids and are helping to care for their older loved ones. Any additional supports are welcome news.”

Liebman says it can cost up to twice as much for someone to live in a nursing home instead of getting quality care at home.

Murphy released this statement:

“This funding represents an opportunity for more residents to continue living within their communities as they age or deal with health challenges. For those who want to remain in their homes with the people they love, it is critical to build a robust workforce of caregivers and invest in home and community-based services in order to expand access to this option. This investment in the Governor’s proposed budget will provide countless New Jerseyans with the stability and independence they deserve as part of the Murphy Administration’s ongoing efforts to support seniors and residents with disabilities throughout our state.”
