PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An early-morning crash on I-95 Wednesday left two people dead and a stretch of the interstate in Port Richmond closed for several hours as police investigated.
Shortly before 1 a.m., Pennsylvania State Police responded to a three-car accident on the northbound side of I-95 at Exit 25, at Allegheny Avenue.
The first car, for an unknown reason, stopped in the center-right lane of the four-lane highway, according to the initial police report. As it was stopped, it was hit from behind by another car.
The impact sent the first driver flying out of the car. The second car rolled over several times, and that driver was ejected as well. Both drivers died at the scene.
A third car swiped the back of the second car and veered off, hitting a concrete barrier on the right shoulder. That driver survived and was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A stretch of I-95 north between Girard and Allegheny avenues was closed for about 4 ½ hours as police investigated the crash.
The victims have not been publicly identified.
