PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It doesn’t appear that many drivers are crossing into New Jersey to avoid the I-95 closure, officials said.
The Delaware River Port Authority has been monitoring traffic volume since Sunday’s I-95 fire and collapse. Spokesperson Mike Williams said there have been no significant changes on the agency’s four bridges — the Benjamin Franklin, the Walt Whitman, the Commodore Barry and the Betsy Ross.
To the north, though, there has been a shift. More drivers have opted for the two-lane Burlington-Bristol Bridge over the Tacony-Palmyra, according to Burlington County Bridge Commission Executive Director Joseph Andl.
“We have seen a change in traffic patterns between the two bridges. Volume at the Tacony-Palmyra has been less, and the Burlington-Bristol has increased,” he said.
Andl said a few hundred more cars used the Burlington-Bristol Monday morning but fewer cars crossed the Tacony-Palmyra, each compared to the Monday before. That amounts to a 35% increase on the Bristol and an 11% decrease on the Tacony.
With traffic congestion early in the week on the Philly side, he said drivers may have shied away from the Tacony-Palmyra.
The commission added an extra cash toll collector on the Burlington-Bristol Bridge to keep traffic flowing.
Overall, revenue from the Burlington-Bristol and Tacony-Palmyra was up nearly 4% on Monday.
