PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Add this detour to your detour: A pole came crashing down on a car Friday morning off to the side of Princeton Avenue and State Road in Northeast Philadelphia, diverting drivers for several hours.
The pole crashed around 5:30 a.m., and downed power lines blocked State Road along the I-95 southbound detour, which is being used while crews repair the section of the interstate that collapsed last week.
A tractor-trailer apparently took down the wires and the pole snapped, which crashed down onto a Volkswagen. The incident has added more mess to an already ugly commute for the last week.
Some lanes were finally reopened around 9:45 a.m. as PECO continues work at the site.
A woman was in the car with her 3-year-old son and two other adults when the pole crashed on top of their car. Fortunately, no one was injured.
Workers just finished demolition of the collapse site Thursday evening — ahead of schedule, Gov. Josh Shapiro applauded earlier this week. Now, they are working around the clock to erect a temporary bridge and get traffic moving again.
Crews are trying to fill the gap of the collapse site and pave over it to create six temporary lanes — three in either direction. It’s unknown how long that will take.
