PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Reports say a mass shooting left at least nine people wounded in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia.
Four of the victims are in critical condition, while the others are stable, according to police. The victims ranged in age from 23 to 40 years old.
Police Inspector D.F. Pace told NBC10 they expect to find there were more than nine victims in the case.
The shooting reportedly happened at about 10:45 p.m. Saturday night near a bar on the corner of Kensington and Allegheny avenues.
Deputy Police Commissioner John Stanford told reporters that the shooters exited a black vehicle and shot at a group of people on a sidewalk before escaping the scene in the vehicle, despite a police presence in the area.
"We have some brazen individuals in this city that don’t care," he said. "They don’t care how many police officers are out here and some of them don’t care how many people are out here."
According to police, more than 40 shell casings were found at the scene. Investigators are working to determine a motive for the shooting as well as identify the shooters.
"Obviously this is very early in the investigation," said Stanford. "There are a number of businesses along this corridor here ... we’ll try to gather video and hopefully be able to get some additional information as well as video surveillance that may be able to help us."
