KYW Medical Report: 9/11’s impact on health lingers 20 years later

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The events of 9/11 changed the world in many ways. For many people who tried to provide help in the aftermath of the attacks, their fight continues to this day.

The attacks on the World Trade Center caused immediate death and destruction, but for those who got out in time, or those who spent months clearing the area, the health impact has been astounding.

A review of 23 articles found that the direct exposure to air pollutants and resuspended debris from the collapse of the towers has been linked to respiratory and cardiac issues, cancer, autoimmune disorders, and thyroid issues.

Post-traumatic stress disorder and depression top the mental health issues. Sleep disorders and gastroesophageal reflux conditions are much greater than among the general population.

Two decades later, the impact remains.
