KYW Medical Report: Boosters for the immunocompromised

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The protective antibodies that are provided by a vaccine or by being naturally exposed to COVID-19 do not last forever.

They lose their effectiveness over time, and for those who have immune systems that are weaker due to health conditions or medications, the antibodies wear out sooner.

This is why boosters are first being offered to the immunocompromised and then to the rest of us. Everyone will need to bolster their own defenses.

This is not a surprise and not unexpected. COVID-19 has been very predictable from the start.

Fortunately, these boosters provide as much as 20 times the protection of the initial vaccines. Of course, the inability to achieve widespread vaccination is giving the virus additional life and staying power.
