PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — There is growing evidence that people who contracted COVID-19 may also develop mental health issues.
The most thorough report to date on COVID-19’s impact on mental health comes from The Lancet. Based on participants who were diagnosed with COVID-19 between Jan. 20 and Dec. 13 of last year, researchers estimate 34% of participants received neurological or mental health diagnoses in the six months after their COVID-19 diagnoses.
For 13% of participants, that was their first diagnosis of a neurological or psychiatric condition.
The most common diagnoses were anxiety disorders — 17% of all the participants. Fourteen percent reported mood disorders, 7% had substance misuse disorders, and 5% had insomnia.
