PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Monoclonal antibodies have gained a great deal of attention as a treatment for COVID-19. They have emergency use authorization from the FDA to treat COVID-19 symptoms, with the goal of reducing symptoms.
What many people do not know is that monoclonal antibodies are made in a lab, and these proteins imitate the actual antibodies we have in our bodies.
Monoclonal antibodies make it very difficult for COVID-19 to replicate itself in a person’s cells.
Clearly, the best approach to fighting COVID-19 is to become fully vaccinated and take precautions such as mask-wearing and social distancing. However, monoclonal antibodies present an additional option with greater opportunity for success if given early after exposure.
