KYW Medical Report: COVID-19 mutations and children

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — COVID-19 has killed about 600,000 people in the U.S. and 3.5 million across the globe. One group that has been largely spared from serious COVID-19 cases — vaccinated or not — has been children.

But with COVID-19 mutations, could this change?

The obvious answer is yes. With RNA viruses, mutations are common, and anything is possible.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins have been studying mutations closely, and they believe that it is highly unlikely. COVID-19 feasts on weaknesses in people, whether caused by autoimmune issues, serious illness and disease (sometimes unrecognized), or poor lifestyle. It also attacks the elderly.

According to researchers, it would take a dramatic genetic change to become excessively aggressive in children.
