PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — COVID-19 has had an impact on just about every industry, and there are concerns that the medical community, in particular, may be weakening.
Physicians, nurses and many other allied health professionals receive significant training to help prepare them for the inevitable emotional issues that are part of the job of caring for people at times of illness. However, month after month of caring for critically ill COVID-19 patients is having a psychological impact on caregivers, especially those in the hospital setting.
Most of the country has 30% vacancies in critical health-related jobs. The percentage is particularly high in nursing.
If you have ever been a patient in a hospital, you know that nurses are the backbone of patient care.
The toll of the virus has been great on them, and those that remain are forced to do more as they take on more shifts in the face of the shortage.
