KYW Medical Report: Effects of marijuana on a developing brain

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Marijuana is being legalized in many parts of the country, but it does not mean it is safe — especially for young people.

A growing number of states are legalizing pot for those 21 and older. Those under 21 have been studied extensively, and there are major concerns that are linked to the developing brain.

The studies warn about a wide variety of issues. Of primary concern is a negative impact on learning, concentration and overall memory. Another key concern is that marijuana can make a person more anxious and paranoid.

There are physical concerns as well for those who have asthma or breathing problems. One other impact of marijuana is diminished reflexes and the potential for auto accidents under the influence.
