KYW Medical Report: Predicting best outcomes based on vaccination rates

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Is there a certain percentage of people who need to be vaccinated in order to dramatically slow down the spread of the virus?

Predicting the path of COVID-19 is not an exact science. It seems our best weapon in predicting the future may be looking at the past and, in a sense, at the future.

This means monitoring other parts of the world that seem to be ahead of us in locations where the virus first mutated, like Europe.

There is another devastating wave sweeping Europe — the fourth, actually. However, Spain, with an 80% vaccination rate, and Portugal, at 88%, have withstood the trend. Other countries in the high 60% and low 70% are suffering from the fourth wave.

Watching the percentages, it appears 80% would need to be our vaccination goal.

Needless to say, we have a long way to go if this is an accurate prediction tool.
