PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Food and Drug Administration is putting measures in place to reduce toxic elements in baby food, but many parents are not aware of the issue.
There are many toxic metals that occur naturally in the earth. The presence of these elements in our food — including baby food — is not anything new, but the FDA is raising awareness because the feeling is that more can be done to lower levels.
Toxic metals like cadmium, arsenic and lead have been found in baby food and juices. The major concern is that in high enough amounts, these metals can impact learning and behavior.
The American Academy of Pediatrics agrees with the FDA that levels should be monitored closely and addressed on a regular basis. Once again, the food is safe but precautions are important.
