KYW Medical Report: The next COVID-19 variants on the horizon

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The delta COVID-19 variant is in our communities, but what about the two new mutations on the horizon, lambda and mu?

COVID-19 will continue to mutate. In fact, all viruses mutate — it is literally a path to survival. If viruses did not mutate, the defense systems in our body would crush them and eliminate them.

Some time ago, the delta strain developed — probably in the body of someone fighting a COVID-19 attack, and a cough or sneeze spread it to another and it was off to the races.

Because delta spreads so fast, it won the race again and again. Now we know lambda, mu and many other Greek letter variants are on the way.

So far, the news is good in the sense that our vaccines are working as designed, but we need to continue to test, encourage vaccines and try to stay a step ahead.
