KYW Medical Report: Understanding COVID-19 genetic variants

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — One thing we have learned about COVID-19 is that it never ceases to challenge us.

One of the biggest concerns today is the development of genetic variants. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the greatest concern with the variants is the fact that they spread far more aggressively than the strain that has been predominant for the past year.

The CDC said all three variants share one specific mutation called D614G. D614G does not make the mutant strains more harmful, but it gives them the chance to spread faster — which is why these strains could easily become the most common strains.
