KYW Medical Report: What is the purpose of sleep? Researchers find out

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Scientists are taking a closer look at something all of us do every day of our lives: sleep.

We can’t avoid it, and many of us crave it. But what is the purpose of sleep?

A new report in the journal Science states that our brains are highly active during sleep. At one time, it was thought that our nervous system rested during sleep, but nothing is further from the truth.

Researchers also say the cardiovascular system is dramatically impacted by not only the amount of sleep but the quality of sleep. And, there is another area impacted: our immune system.

Finally, we can put away the notion once and for all that the strongest and most efficient people require little sleep.
