PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Legendary Philadelphia Disc-Jockey Pierre Robert has passed away at 70 years old.
The announcement was over the air Wednesday by 93.3 WMMR, the station he joined 44 years ago.
Robert joined the station 44 years ago in 1981, and hosted shows in the morning, midday and evenings throughout his tenure, introducing millions of listeners over the years to new rock artists.
His current show, the midday show on 93.3 WMMR, aired from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every weekday and featured exclusive interviews with artists, in-studio live performances, “On This Day” history lessons, and his beloved Vinyl Cuts.
Robert was an avowed live music fan and avid concert-goer to venues across Philadelphia.
He began his career in San Francisco at KSAN-FM, one of the country’s first progressive rock stations, and moved to Philadelphia not long after the station changed formats.
Robert had signed a multi-year contract extension with the station in 2024. He was honored with a spot on the Philadelphia Music Alliance’s Walk of Fame in 2019.
Beasley Media Group called Robert “a true radio icon and one of the most recognized personalities in the City of Philadelphia.”
“We all have heavy hearts today,” said Beasley Media Group Chief Executive Officer Caroline Beasley. “Pierre’s unwavering love for music and his deep connection with listeners made him one of radio’s most enduring and beloved voices. He will be greatly missed.”
